Why
would someone who lives in West Palm Beach Florida and has since 1993, and has
lived in Florida since 1988 write a blog about Philadelphia, and specifically
Philadelphia sports.
I was born
in Mt. Holly New Jersey which is a 30 minute drive from Philadelphia, my father
and grandfather were both born in Philadelphia.
I started rooting for the Philadelphia teams when I picked my number for
t-ball in the early 80’s. The number 6
for Dr. J (Julius Erving). I came into
my own as a Philadelphia fan in the 80’s rooting for the Buddy Ryan Eagles,
Randall Cunningham, Jerome Brown, Andre Waters, Charles Barkley, Dutch Daulton,
Nails (Lenny Dykstra). I fell in love
with the Flyers with the Legion of Doom line (Leclair, Lindros, and Renberg).
I have
over 25 years of disappointments, the Fog Bowl, Randall blowing out his knee,
Joe Carter’s homerun, Iverson verse the Lakers, Donovan blowing out his knee,
breaking his ankle, getting hurt against the panthers, losing to the Bucs in Philly
after almost returning the opening kickoff, the 2004 Superbowl, Lindros
concussions, swept by the redwings, the zero angle shot against the Blackhawks,
and the losses to the Giants and Cardinals the last two years. That just came from memory, I’m sure I could
go on for days if I tried harder.
We did
have the Phillies in 2008 though, we will always have that. If you are keeping track here are the titles. Phillies – 1980, 2008. Sixers – 1983. Flyers – 1975, 1976. Eagles – 1948, 1949, 1960 all before the Superbowl. If you are keeping track that is 5
championships since I was born in 1975, and 8 total all time. All but one of the 5 happened before I was 8
years old. Way too many years of disappointment
and waiting for next year.
My other
true love of Philadelphia is the food, Philly Pretzels, Tastykake, Birch Beer,
Sub Rolls, and last but not least Cheese Steaks (especially John’s Roast
Pork).
So if
you still doubt my legitimacy for writing a Philly blog, too bad deal with it I
am doing it anyway.
